Abstract

Optical and radio observations of nearby and distant powerful radio galaxies with extended optical emission-line regions are discussed. Comparisons of optical emission-line images with radio continuum maps, supplemented with detailed optical spectroscopy, show that the interaction of radio jets and lobes with ambient gas can have dramatic consequences for both the radio source and its surrounding medium. We will discuss evidence for the occurence of large scale star formation and collimated ionizing radiation along the axes of radio galaxies. We also present preliminary results indicative of large rotation measures in two distant radio galaxies.
