Photoacoustic X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Abstract

The transient heat generation of material due to X-ray absorption was found to be detected as the photoacoustic effect. The photoacoustic signal which was detected by a microphone linearly corresponded to the ring current of the storage ring and to the ion chamber current for monochromatic X-ray beam, and showed the maximum intensity for metal foil when the thickness of the foil was close to the absorption length. The spectroscopic study of this heat generation effect revealed not only the inner shell edge absorption but also the fine structure at the edge absorption region. The spectrum for polycrystal copper quite corresponded to the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The Fourier transform analysis of the spectrum gave the atomic distances of copper atoms. On the basis of this results, depth profiling of the nickel plated copper by EXAFS and imaging analysis of model sample with focused X-ray beam scanning were performed. The future possibility of this method which extended the photoacoustic spectroscopy into the X-ray region was briefly discussed.
