Coherence effects in slow ion-atom collisions

Successively more sophisticated collision experiments yield information of increasing detail. Few-electron or real one-electron systems are good candidates to obtain such knowledge, the presence of only few (active electrons greatly reducing the complexity of calculations. Although measurements of cross sections, alignment, orientation etc. often yield complementary information, the great detail of such studies present ever more stringent and demanding tests to theory. Many of these methods have been learned from e.g. nuclear physics and electron scattering; they are now of increasing impact also in ion-atom collision physics on the way to “complete” experiments. Such studies are of particular interest in atomic physics since the well-known (Coulomb-) force make such systems an ideal testing ground for few-body quantum dynamics.
