Re-examining the Corona/Wind Dividing Line
Part of the Lecture Notes in Physics book series (LNP, volume 291)

Abstract

A review of observations and analyses of the outer atmospheres of “non-coronnl” stars is given, with an emphasis on spectroscopic diagnostics. These stars, lying to the right of the “corona-wind division” in the HR diagram, have no detectable material above temperatures of ∼ 2×104 K, and instead of solar-like transition regions and coronae, they possess relatively massive winds and expanding “basal-flux” chromospheres. The discussion is restricted to “normal”, single, red giants, i.e. oxygen-rich stars which have not evolved as far as the asymptotic giant branch, and which have not yet developed massive, dusty molecular outflows. The methods described can in principle be applied to cool star chromospheres in general.
