Interconnection networks for massively parallel computer systems

Abstract

The paper discusses the topics of interconnection networks for MIMD or MIMD/SIMD architectures with a large number of processing nodes from a practical point of view. The interconnection behavior of the different network types is pointed out, and their technical feasibility is discussed under the aspects of pin limitation, real estate limitation, interconnection bandwidth obtainable, and cost of realization. Some "best choice" for the interconnection structure of a large MIMD/SIMD supercomputer is proposed and will be realized in the SUPRENUM system.
