BL Lacertae objects: Accretion, jets, and winds

Abstract

Observed properties of BL Lacertae objects, in particular X-ray spectral shape, overall broadband spectral shape, and rapid variability in intensity, are reviewed briefly. A number of promising scenarios for the energy-producing mechanisms are then discussed in light of the observations. These include accretion disks in the vicinity of a massive black hole, and synchrotron and inverse Compton emission from a relativistic jet. Finally, the possible presence of winds, suggested by broad X-ray absorption features in the spectra of a handful of BL Lac objects, is described.
