An improvement of deduction plans: Refutation plans

A theorem proving method is described which takes the advantages of the methods of Cox and Pietrzykowski (called deduction plans) and of Shostak (called refutation graphs) and avoids some of their disadvantages. The method separates deduction and unification, thus allowing both AND- and OR-parallelism and directed backtracking. It even allows to drop the solution of a literal L without dropping it as a solution of literals factored to L. In addition, the unification algorithm used allows simple and directed backtracking of the unifiers, too.
