Medical polymer adhesives

Abstract

A critical survey of literature data on medical polymer adhesives is presented Various classes of polymers are discussed from the point of view of their application in surgery.

Cyanacrylate adhesives are described along with some data on the strength of adhesive joints of living tissues, the processes of biodegradation and elimination from the organism, and the reaction of living tissues to the adhesives. Among other classes of medical adhesives, epoxy compounds and gelatin-resorcin-formaldehyde resins and their applications are discussed (e.g., experimental glueing of bones with epoxy resins).

Special attention is given to the polyurethane adhesives. A generalized approach to the creating of medical glues is proposed based on the author's experimental results. This approach includes consideration of phenomena at the living tissue-adhesive interface, analysis of weak border layer formation, and analysis of regeneration processes by adhesive contact with the living tissue. The general principles of medical biocompatible polymer synthesis have been formulated and some ways of solving arising problems are proposed.
