Polymerization of butadiene and butadiyne (diacetylene) derivatives in layer structures

Abstract

This article deals with the polymerization of 1,4-disubstituted butadiene and butadiyne (diacetylene) derivatives in layer structures. An outline is given on the polymerization properties in monomolecular layers at the air-water-interface, Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers, bi- and multilamellar aggregates in aqueous dispersion (vesicles, liposomes), perovskite-type layer structures, and further structures with a marked two-dimensional extension.

Recent results concerning photochemistry and -physics of the polymerization reactions, structure and morphology of the layer-type arrays, are compiled. Potential applications of the resulting polymers making use of their unusual physical properties are discussed.
