Formation of living propagating polymer radicals in microspheres and their use in the synthesis of block copolymers

Abstract

When acrylamide derivatives such as N-methylacrylamide (NMAAm) and N-methylmethacrylamide (NMMAm) are polymerized in adequate solvents by radical initiators, the resulting polymers are dispersed as microspheres which contain living propagating radicals. In the polymerization of NMMAm in benzene with AIBN, the solvent-cage escaping cyanopropyl radicals are converted to living poly-(NMMAm) radicals in high yields, ca. 90%. These living polymer radicals react easily with other vinyl monomers at room temperature to give stable propagating radicals of the second monomers, resulting in block copolymers. These reaction processes were investigated by ESR.
