The convective dynamo : A numerical experiment

We report preliminary results obtained by high resolution numerical simulation of Boussinesq magnetoconvection in a flat infinite layer of fluid using a spectral method. The main result is that convection by itself, without rotation, can produce a dynamo effect for Rayleigh numbers about 100 times critical and magnetic Prandtl numbers larger than ≌ 1.
