Commensurate and incommensurate phases of a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting vortices

Abstract

Superconducting films whose thickness is periodically modulated in one direction provide an attractive system to study commensurate and incommensurate phases of the two-dimensional vortex lattice. Critical currents, macroscopic quantum phenomena and the dynamic response of the vortices to a small driving rf-field are shown to be sensitive probes of the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition which is triggered by soliton excitations.
