Projectile continuum electrons in highly charged ion-atom collisions

The emission of electrons at zero degree in collisions of 20-MeV Auq+ (5≤q≤19) with He has been measured in coincidence with final projectile charge state. Autoionization lines are observed, which are due to transfer and excitation. The large transfer-ionization cross section observed is accounted for by transfer of two electrons to a highly correlated ion state, followed by loss of one electron to the continuum. The ionization cross section is entirely accounted for by electron capture to the continuum for q ≿ 10.
