Abstract

The review describes the character and properties of labels used in protein labeling (radio- and stable nuclides, chromophores, fluorophores, enzymes, biospecific, affinity and other types of labels). The ways of labeling are described and evaluated in relation to a certain label. A lot of attention is paid to the individual areas in which labeled-proteins are applied (enzymology, investigations of protein structure and mechanism of enzyme action, studies on cell morphology and organisation, metabolic studies, imunochemistry, analysis, medical diagnosis and research and the possible industrial separations of enzymes).

The survey concludes with a proposed definition of a protein label and with an account of present trends in protein labeling.
