Link protocols are designed so as to move frames between communicating entities in a reliable fashion. Clearly, absolute reliability is not achievable. Consequently, processes which belong to higher levels of abstraction and which require better reliability must be provided with some additional mechanisms. This is the purpose of other communication protocols built on top of link protocols (see Chapters 6 and 7).
