Part of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science book series (LNCS, volume 105)

A number of important concepts were introduced in this section. First is the idea of a layered structure of protocols which are used to match the hardware and software characteristics. Second is that a distributed processor is not necessarily a network, it could also be a distributed computer; however, the same design regime applies to both concepts. Lastly, is a definition and overview of a number of concepts which will be more fully developed later in this book.
