Saclay activities in electro-and photonuclear physics at intermediate energies and future prospects
The interest of a 2 GeV accelerator with a large duty cycle seems already evident if one wants to pursue a detailed study of mesonic degrees of freedom and partly unveil the quark and gluon degrees of freedom. This machine would therefore permit nuclear physics to make an important advance towards the understanding of nuclear structure at very short distances and hadronic physics in general. However, it is possible that the harvest of experimental results and the progress of theory in the coming years will require the need of a higher energy machine.
Whithout any doubt all the european community of nuclear physicists would be greatly stimulated by the prospect of recovering an “avant-garde” position at the core of the physics of the infinitesimally small.
