A precision determination of h/mn (h Planck constant, mn neutron mass) would improve our knowledge of the fundamental constants. It can be carried out by measuring the wavelength and the velocity of reactor neutrons. Several authors have proposed methods for this experiment. Here, a method is described in which a beam of polarized neutrons is modulated by periodically changing the direction of the polarization vector. First experimental tests of the modulation principle are reported.
