Nets as a tool in teaching and in terminology work

Abstract

This paper deals with some standard and non-standard applications of nets, net diagrams and net morphisms.

First, nets of channels and agencies are introduced, then nets of means and activities and nets representing relations and functions. These interpretations and the graphical representation are of great help in teaching, because they permit to represent different conceptual levels and aspects of systems to be explained by one simple formalism. The graphical representation may even be used in a naive, intuitive way to make complicated situations more transparent. This holds for static system structures, dynamic structures (processes) as well as for situations formalized by relations and functions, as is demonstrated by many examples.

In addition to teaching, the different interpretations of nets and their interrelations (expressed by net morphisms) are a suitable basis for terminology work. How the ideas of General Net Theory may help in the systematic development of a consistent terminology is demonstrated for the case of dialog systems, where phenomena on very different conceptual levels have to be covered.
