The meta-language: A reference manual

The recent work of the Vienna Laboratory on the subject of semantic definitions has used the "denotational semantics" approach. Although this is a clear break with the earlier abstract interpreter approach, the newer meta-language has tried to preserve and even improve upon the readability of the earlier "VDL" notation. The meta-language described here has been used in the definitions of large programming languages and systems. This paper is not a tutorial; rather it provides a reference document for the meta-language.
