Surface properties of electron-hole liquid in germanium

Abstract

Using density-functional formalism and the exponential density profiles with variational parameters, we show that inclusion of first gradient correction to the exchange-correlation energy has a significant quantitative effect on the surface energy of the electron-hole liquid (EHL) in germanium. The surface energy of EHL in Ge is also calculated by self-consistently solving the Kohn-Sham equations in a local density approximation. The effect of the exchange-correlation gradient correction is also included. The surface energy of EHL in Ge under very large <111> uniaxial stress is found to be a factor of sixteen smaller than the value in Ge at zero stress. The question of charge on an electron hole drop is also discussed.
