Fusion and fission induced by heavy ions

Abstract

Some problems associated with the mechanism of compound nucleus formation in reactions induced by ions with mass ≫ 40 amu are considered. Experiments to synthesize neutron-deficient nuclei with Z=100, 104 and 106 by bombarding Pb isotopes with 40-Ar, 50-Ti and 54-Cr ions are described. Some data on delayed fission of neutron-deficient Am isotopes in the Pb + Al reaction are given.

The properties of heavy nuclei are discussed in terms of the present-day fission theory. The possibilities of synthesizing elements with Z >106 are investigated.
