Abstract

A survey is given of measurements of nucleon separation energies from occupied shells. Particular emphasis rests on the results of pick-up experiments and recent quasi-free scattering experiments which have considerably improved our knowledge of nuclear hole states. So, in 40Ca the average separation energy of is protons has been found to be 50 MeV (rather than 80 MeV). Similarly, the average separation energy of a 1p1/2 proton from 28Si is 16 MeV (rather than 25 MeV). Recently, one has obtained evidence for an increase of the 1p spin-orbit splitting from 6.5 MeV in 16O to about 15 MeV in 28Si. Results from pick-up and knock-out experiments are now in full agreement.

The relation between the experimental removal energies and single particle energies from many-body theories is briefly discussed. It is demonstrated that the inclusion of density dependent interactions improves the results of Hartree-Fock calculations considerably. Eventually, the use of model independent sum rules is recommended for future applications.
