Abstract
In contrast to the 360-degree panoramic views offered by the existing museum, the new extension building affords selectively directed views. Selected segments of the city and landscape, such as Rio’s Sugarloaf Mountain, become vast backdrops of specific exhibition areas. The new museum is located at the foot of the rocks below Oscar Niemeyer’s museum building and formally relates to certain topographic elements of the coast. The building is situated on different levels, partly oriented toward the rocks, partly projecting toward the sea.
