Abstract

Laryngeal cancer affects approximately12,000 people in the United States each year, and nearly half of tumors present as an early-stage tumor (T1–2 N0) arising from the true vocal cords. The major risk factor for laryngeal carcinoma is tobacco use, and greater the 95 % of patients with laryngeal cancer have a history of smoking (Wydner et al. 1956). Other risk factors, like alcohol and gastroesophageal reflux disease, also may play a role in the in development of laryngeal cancers, although they rarely lead to this malignancy without a concomitant smoking history. The role of HPV in the etiology of laryngeal cancer is not clear, although HPV-positive laryngeal cancers have been reported.
