Acute Appendicitis

Acute appendicitis is the most frequent cause of nontraumatic acute abdominal pain that requires emergency surgery. Its diagnosis remains challenging when relying only on clinical and laboratory findings, which explains the high rate of normal appendix after appendectomy. During the past 20 years, imaging techniques and particularly computed tomography (CT) have allowed preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis to be more reliable, related complications to be evaluated, the negative appendectomy rate and costs of caring to be lowered, and differential diagnosis to be sought. After an anatomical and pathophysiological review, we will highlight the use and impact of CT in the diagnosis and management of acute appendicitis.
