Towards OpenGIS Systems

The Vector Data Storage Component Evaluated

Abstract

The Open GIS Consortium has defined and classified two dimensional geometries for the SQL92 Data Model Architecture in order to improve interoperability of spatial information systems. This specification was used as a reference to evaluate the implemented data models of two commercial GIS packages. It is concluded that the data models of both commercial packages are not OpenGIS compliant. They generally follow the rules as set by the Open GIS Consortium, but there are still deflections. These deflections are related to the concepts of the package developers and the way geometric entities are handled in their software. The fact that deflections exist should encourage a more in depth study of the OpenGIS Data Model Architecture in order to capture all occurrences of geometric phenomena. A first contribution was made by examining geometries in the Dutch Topographic Map scale 1 : 10.000.
