Nearing the Centennial: 1980–1991

Abstract

As Stanford’s centennial neared, President Donald Kennedy oversaw a record-breaking fund-raising campaign. Its cornerstone was to be the creation of a new $250 million science and engineering quad, touted as the “nation’s largest effort to renovate and expand research facilities on a university campus.” However, only two buildings were constructed before the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
