After my time at Grove/Atlantic ended, I accepted a position as art director at Doubleday Books. At first, working at Doubleday was a little overwhelming. Coming from a smaller publishing house, I was used to meetings that took place maybe once a month, or every two months, but at Doubleday there were meetings every week, and I soon understood that you were expected to deliver impact very quickly. During my first weeks, working on covers such as Edgewater Angels and John Henry Days, I simply continued what I had been doing at FSG—coming up with solid type treatments.
