Abstract

Though the 1970s was the heyday of salsa, Latin sounds were also expanding into other musical genres. As historian David Toop has noted, Latin rock was a “panethnic” utopian movement that “mixed funk with jazz, post-psychedelic rock, African, and Latin elements.” Mandrill, War, and Malo are a few of the bands that pioneered this new sound, but the undisputed leader of the movement was Carlos Santana.
