Abstract

This chapter deals with some major problems associated with social insurance systems. After examining the reasons which led to the emergence of these systems, the author attempts to shed some light on their characteristic growth pattern. He subsequently undertakes a comparative study of social insurance systems in OECD member states, discusses some difficulties which have arisen within the European Single Market, gives a general overview of the economic effects of social insurance, and pinpoints problems posed by population aging and various proposals for pension reform.
