Abstract
The present study is concerned with an investigation of the local conditions for initiation of cleavage fracture in ferritic steels which have been analyzed in the context of a research program directed to different methods of cleavage fracture assessment (Hohe et al. [Swindeman, R.W. et al., Pressure Vessels and Piping, 507–512, 2004.]). The investigations are performed experimentally and numerically using a German nuclear grade 22NiMoCr3-7 (A 508 class 2) pressure vessel steel as a material example under forged conditions. The heat treatment of the material consists of an austenization at 900°C, quenching in water, tempering at 650°C for 7.5 hours and subsequent air cooling.
