Abstract
Chapter 2 was concerned with a preferred global community considered almost without reference to the nature of the persons within it—as one participant said, ‘It seems to be a study of missing persons’! By way of contrast, in this chapter the focus shifts to somewhat idealised individuals, as desirable elements within that global community, as worthy ends in their own right, and as means to the social ends identified earlier. It is here that the comment of Brian Hill (1992) is taken on board:
