In seeking to understand explanations for low achievement in school numeracy we have been endeavouring to compare and contrast the experiences children have at home and at school. We have done this by analysing the numeracy practices we have found in homes and schools. This chapter seeks to look more closely at these numeracy practices to find the similarities, differences and relationships between them.
We begin with a brief review of the intentions behind our use of the idea underlying numeracy practices (see Chapter 2) and then, through looking at the characteristics of sites and domains, we attempt to arrive at a finer grained and nuanced way of describing distinctions and relationships between them.
