A Note on Interpretation of Shm Data for Bridges

Abstract

Notwithstanding the current advances in the development of sensors for SHM of civil structures, the interpretation of the collected data remains the Achilles heel for SHM. With the help of a few examples, drawn from the personal experience of the author, it has been shown that the interpretation of SHM data is not a straightforward exercise. Factors such as boundary conditions and temperature effects require careful and thoughtful investigation. Although it has not always been possible to do so for every type of structure, every effort should be made to explain the observed behaviour of the monitored structures. In predicting the failure loads of structures from responses collected under ‘service’ loads, allowance should also be made of the fact that the actual failure load of the structure might be different than that assumed.
