Abstract
Mainly due to geometric incompatibilities all CVT-chains do not perfectly move in a plane but show also out-of-plane effects, which cannot be neglected. In addition the elastic behaviour of all components play a crucial role concerning three-dimensional motion. With respect to modeling this increases the number of degrees of freedom considerably leading to growing simulation times. On the other hand design or design improvements of chains are only possible applying a 3D-theory. Paper presents mechanical and mathematical models together with some applications.
