Abstract

Space VLBI (SVLBI) is an ambitious new technique, which, in the past couple of years, has proven its usefulness in high angular resolution imaging of bright compact radio sources. An overview of the principles of SVLBI, the extension of the VLBI technique with an orbiting interferometer element, is given. The first dedicated SVLBI satellite HALCA was launched as a part of the Japanese-led VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) in February 1997. The VSOP operations and the scientific program are reviewed. The mission’s highlights are presented. Finally, the current plans for future SVLBI missions are briefly outlined.
