Abstract

History of the “Theory of Machines and Mechanisms” Department of the Bauman Moscow Technical University in the first half of XX century is closely connected with Profs. N. I. Mertsalov, and L. P. Smirnov. Both of them graduated from two high schools: Moscow State University and Imperial Moscow Technical School (Bauman Moscow Technical University nowadays). Besides their study of the theory of mechanisms and machines (TMM), they were involved in other scientific fields: thermodynamics (N. I. Mertsalov), and steam machines (L. P. Smirnov).

In this paper the pedagogical activity of both the scientists before and after the October Revolutionis described. Author’s point of view concerns cases of different understanding of the TMM by these great scientists. In author’s opinion, this can be explained by peculiarities of a typical pre-revolution and post-revolution student. Comparison of Prof. Mertsalov’s book “Dynamics of Mechanisms” (1909–1912), and Prof. Smirnov’s book “Kinetics of Mechanisms and Machines” (1926), is performed.
