A student's introduction to atomic physics usually occurs as an undergraduate in a course entitled “Modern Physics”. The subject is introduced by describing the results of some early twentieth century experiments that demonstrated the inadequacy of classical physics to describe events on the microscopic scale of atoms. Also included in these introductory courses are descriptions of theoretical efforts to explain the surprising experimental results.
