Abstract
Gram-negative straight rods lacking prosthecae; hyaline stalks found in one genus (Nevskia). Endospores are not produced, no accumulation of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate inclusions. Motile with polar flagellation, flexing/gliding (Lysobacter), or nonmotile. Obligate aerobes, having a strictly respiratory metabolism with oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. Catalase positive. Nitrate not reduced, with the exception of Stenotrophomonas. Oxidase production varies. Fatty acid profiles are complex; branched chain and/or hydroxy fatty acids are found. Ubiquinone Q8 is generally found. Optimum temperature 20–35°C; except Thermomonas, 37–50°C.
