Abstract
Patients who present with suspected hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) require specialized counseling and treatment. The characteristics of HNPCC, the availability of genetic testing for HNPCC, and the potential implications of positive and negative test results must be discussed with patients and family members in detail. In patients who decide to proceed with genetic testing, results must be communicated in an appropriate manner, and follow-up is essential. Treatment for patients with colon cancer who are members of an HNPCC kindred must be individualized, but the treatment of choice is total abdominal colectomy with an ileorectal anastomosis.
