Continuous Fibre Reinforced Glass and Glass-Ceramic Matrix Composites

  • Chapter
Handbook of Ceramic Composites

Abstract

Glass and glass-ceramic matrix composites with continuous fibre reinforcement are considered in this Chapter, covering aspects of their fabrication, microstructural characterisation, properties and applications. The great variety of composite systems developed during the last 30 years is discussed and their outstanding thermomechanical properties and high technological potential are highlighted. These composites constitute a new family of high-temperature capability, lightweight structural materials exhibiting quasi-ductile fracture behaviour, characteristics which allow their application as critical components, e.g. in the aerospace sector, energy-conversion systems, metallurgy processes, precision and micro-engineering, special machinery as well as in automotive components and chemical plants. Remaining challenges for the future development of these composites which currently limit their wider commercial exploitation are discussed.
