1. Abstract
Astrocytes make up greater than 50% of the cell population of the mammalian central nervous system and provide both structural and functional support to the neuronal population. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction1, protein immunoblotting,2 and immunohistochemical evidence3 indicate the presence of both Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (COT) and K-Cl COT in astrocytes. Of the four known isoforms of the K-Cl COT, only KCC1 is present in C6 glioma cells.4
