Abstract

In 1994, a project was funded by the European Union to assess the genetic diversity of a range of Central American and Caribbean tree species and to determine its implications for conservation, sustainable use, and management. We describe the germplasm-sampling strategy and field collection methods for sampling big-leaf mahogany populations across Mesoamerica from Mexico to Panamá. Our observations confirm the severe diminution of populations of this species.
