Radiofrequency Ablation of Solid Renal Tumors
Animal and human studies have demonstrated that radiofrequency energy can be applied safely as a minimally invasive treatment modality for small solid renal masses. Percutaneous placement under conscious sedation is presently recommended only in an investigational setting in patients for whom traditional radical nephrectomy or nephron sparing surgery is not possible. Numerous questions remain about the efficacy and reproducibility of radiofrequency energy to completely ablate renal cell carcinoma. Several studies have demonstrated viable tumor after RFA. Unfortunately, clinical studies to date have principally utilized existing treatment schema for hepatic lesions on renal masses. New treatment protocols need to be developed that are specific for the tissue characteristics of renal cell carcinoma. New techniques, perhaps using previously studied tissue-altering characteristics in animal models, may increase treatment area and reduce tumor viability. Radiofrequency ablation is an exciting new treatment modality that may significantly decrease the morbidity of the surgical treatment of small incidentally discovered renal masses.
