Abstract
The examples in Chapter 2 show how the SPN building blocks can be used to formally specify a variety of discrete-event stochastic systems. The question then arises as to exactly how large a class of discrete-event systems can be modelled within the SPN framework. Although this question cannot be answered precisely, the modelling power of SPNs can usefully be compared with that of generalized semi-Markov processes (GSMPs).
