Abstract

Almost all magnetic phenomena described in the preceding two chapters depend on the lifting of the degeneracy of the (2J + 1)-degenerate ground-state manifold by magnetic fields (internal and external) and on the occupation of the levels of this manifold as a function of magnetic-field strength and temperature.
