Regulation, Inhibition and Protection of Photosystem I

  • Chapter
Regulation of Photosynthesis

Part of the book series: Advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration ((AIPH,volume 11))

Summary

The dynamic nature of Photosystem I (PS I) reaction center complex is described with emphasis on regulatory aspects such as synthesis, assembly, degradation, inhibition and protection. Although the dynamic and regulatory aspects of PS I have been somewhat neglected, there have been several reports on the assembly of this photosystem during greening and its degradation during senescence. The PS I/PS II ratio is known to change in response to the surrounding environment. It is also established that not only PS II but also PS I can be photoinhibited. The dynamic aspects of PS I can now be viewed based on the well-defined structural image of the complex, and some recent findings in that respect will be described. The signal transduction pathway involved in the regulatory process will be also discussed.
