Brody H: The Healer’s Power. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1992. In this book Howard Brody investigates the nature, sources, and implications of the physician’s power. Acknowledging that this power has both positive and negative sides, Brody develops a medical ethic based on the interactive process of doctoring. Chapter 16 on “The Physician’s Character” is an excellent discussion of virtues in medicine.
Cassell EJ: The Nature of Suffering and the Goals of Medicine. New York, Oxford University Press, 1991. In this book Eric Cassell investigates the human meaning of suffering and develops an understanding of medical practice in which relieving that suffering is a major goal.
Williams WC: The Doctor Stories. Compiled by Robert Coles. New York, New Directions, 1984. This book brings together many of William Carlos Williams’s short stories about taking care of patients. They illustrate many of the experiences, virtues, and abuses of doctoring discussed in this chapter. In particular, “Old Doc Rivers” is a fine story about an impaired physician.
