Guided Reading
For those new to technology, and in particular the technologies applied in higher education, we recommend two complementary books. The first is by A. Warren et al., Technology in Teaching and Learning: An Introductory Guide, Kogan Page, 1998. The second is by P. Maier et al., Using Technology in Teaching and Learning, Kogan Page, 1999. The first book takes the reader through the fundamentals of using computers and the second book explores ways in which computers can be used to support the teaching of large groups, to deliver learning resources to students, and for communication between studen
If you want to go further, and explore more of using the Internet in your teaching, we suggest I. Forsyth, Teaching and Learning Materials and the Internet, Kogan Page, 200
To maintain your currency in the uses of technology beyond the material in these books we urge you to monitor the literature in books, journals and especially in the electronic resources of the kind available on the World Wide Web.
There is rapidly growing number of books, as well as resources on the Web, that can assist you with some of the educational issues of using technology in education. We suggest the following three books
A. Inglis, P. Ling and V. Joosten, Delivering Digitally: Managing the Transition to the Knowledge Media. Kogan Page, London, 1999.
R. Phillips, The Developer′s Handbook to Interactive Multimedia, A Practical Guide for Educational Applications. Kogan Page, 1997.
D. Brooks, Web Teaching. Plenum Publishing Corp, New York and London, 1997.
If you are concerned to evaluate materials and educational technologies we suggest M. Tessmer, Planning and Conducting Formative Evaluations. Kogan Page, London, 1993. This is an interesting mixture of useful guidance on planning evaluations, evaluating materials, and the whole notion of formative evaluation. Hartley′s book (see below) is also helpful on evaluating materials.
J. Hartley, Designing Instructional Text (3rd edition), Kogan Page, London, 1994, is highly recommended for preparing text-based materials (books, manuals, handouts, computer-generated or stored text). We used Hartley when preparingthis book.
